Join master sculptor Josh Guge for this 2 day-long seminar on carving and painting a “smoothie” Pileated Woodpecker! These demonstration videos were made during a class he taught at his studio in Elgin. The seminar includes 19 demonstration videos ranging from 5 to 25 minutes in length. The videos are loaded with important information you need to learn how to take a block of wood and turn it into a piece of art!
Josh covers every detail in the process from roughing out the basic shape of the bird to adding separation lines between feather groups, sanding, and finishing. You can decide if you want a simplified or a more detailed smoothie. He also demonstrates the entire painting process. This paint style is totally different from the style Josh uses on his detailed birds. In some ways, painting a smoothie can be more difficult because you don’t have a textured surface to fall back on. Josh shows how to use specific brushes to paint on feathers. This gives the illusion of carved textures feathers.
Josh is known for simplifying this complex process and helping students of all skill levels reach their personal goals.

Josh has taken several process pictures of his pileated woodpecker carving and posted them on his Facebook page. Students are encouraged to print those pictures and use them for reference during class.
To get the most out of the seminar, students are encouraged to watch all of the videos before they begin to cave. This way they will understand the process better and how each step will build on the next.
